ABOUT

OUR BRAND PHILOSOPHY

In whatever situation we are in - whether we are aware of it or not - we take part in a process of co-creation. Whether it is co-creating life, a space, a product, a relationship, or a feeling... there are three things that work at play:

THE INTENTION, THE ACTION AND THE RESULT!

KHONDE comes from Nankhonde's name. It means ‘Mother of Many.’ The literal translation of the word comes from Konde, which means "banana" and Na, which means "mother of". The meaning is drawn from the many fruits that bananas produce. The brand values come from the process bananas go through before a tree completes its lifespan. Banana trees will not die until they drop a bulb to start the life of a new tree. This expression of growth and reinvention speaks to how we adapt to changes in our lives.

What Nankhonde shares with the world through her brand is a profound respect and love for her Zambian heritage, woven with an appreciation of the western influences that define her Africa.

OUR STORY

KHONDE founder, Nankhonde van den Broek, was raised in Zambia, Switzerland and France. Early in her life and professional career, she had the privilege of traveling to and working in different countries. During her various travels across the world, she appreciated the way a bag can complete an outfit or make a statement. The idea for KHONDE was conceived in Senegal, born in Serbia and now lives in Zambia.

The KHONDE Signature Clutch was the very first bag Nankhonde made with her own hands in Belgrade, Serbia in 2010 under the apprenticeship of a wonderful young man called Mile. He loved the idea she wanted to create and the emotion she wanted to evoke through the bags. Mile was a design student in his final year and he took the time to teach Nankhonde how to sew and work with leather.

The very first SEKELA clutch was made by a leather craftsman in Zambia; a wise man called Leonard who spent hours creating patterns and cutting leather and advising Nankhonde on sourcing materials from local sources until they got it right.

Entrepreneurship is not always easy. In 2015, after five years of designing and producing clutch bags in Zambia under her local brand, Chitenge Life, Nankhonde sold her last bag and shut down production. Struggling with the costs of local sourcing, managing a supply chain and producing quality in large quantities, she decided to go to school and learn how to truly realise her vision.

Nankhonde's vision manifested through a course in Luxury brand management and product design - a key turning point that encouraged her to start afresh with a new line of high-end clutch bags designed in Zambia, made in Italy!
